ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar had his first mission in the EUR/NAT regions starting in Tirana, Albania to open the 70th Special Meeting of Directors General of Civil Aviation of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) on 26-28 August 2021.
The Secretary General had a bilateral meetings with Mrs. Bellinda Balluku, the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy of Albania, with Mrs Eldira Kraja, the Executive Director of Albanian Civil Aviation; as well as meetings with Directors General for Civil Aviation of France, Germany, Spain and Turkey. Each provided crucial insights into their efforts to provide air transport connectivity and possible areas for cooperation with ICAO. Pan-European priorities were identified and
discussed in further meetings with Albanian and European aviation leaders, including ECAC President; the Director General of EUROCONTROL; the Director for Aviation in the European Union; and the European Aviation Safety Agency's Executive Director.
Furthermore, from 30-31 August 2021, the Secretary General visited the ICAO EUR/NAT Office in Paris, France; where he held teleconferences with the Directors General for Civil Aviation of Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Morocco, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Tunisia and Uzbekistan.
He also had the opportunity to have discussions with the CEO of Airbus Mr. Guillaume Faury on 31 August 2021.
These meetings were an opportunity for the Secretary General to establish a direct rapport with the DGs and Industry, share his plans and obtain feedback on the needs and priorities of States and Industry.
The Secretary General also underscored the importance of the ICAO High-Level Conference on COVID-19 to foster the alignment of cross border public health safety measures along the approaches that have proven to be successful, thereby accelerating the return of international air connectivity. The ICAO High-Level Conference on COVID-19 will open on 12 October 2021.
