ICAO Assistance to Solar Impulse Round-the-World Flight
ICAO provided advice and coordination support to the Solar Impulse Team in its challenge to circumnavigate the Earth using only solar energy. This historic initiative is seen as very much in keeping with the spirit of Article 44 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation encouraging the art of aircraft design and operation for peaceful purposes and promoting, generally, the development of all aspects of international civil aeronautics. Consequently, ICAO was honoured to serve as an Institutional and Aeronautical Partner for the Solar Impulse Round-the-World Flight.
Innovative green technologies, such as those now being employed by the solar impulse project, play a key role in the basket of environmental protection measures that the Organization strongly encourages. The round-the-world solar flights began in March 2015 and will continue into 2016. The flights require special flight authorizations and permits, and ICAO plays an occasional intermediary role in seeking and attaining cooperation to facilitate overflight and landing permissions.
