Environmental Seminar

In September, ICAO convened the Global Aviation Partnerships on Emissions Reductions (E-GAP) Seminar, with an accompanying exhibition, which was attended by approximately 250 participants from governments, industry and other UN and international organizations.

The seminar addressed various topics including developments in aircraft technology and research programmes; aircraft end-of-service and recycling; green operations and airports; adaptation to climate change; sustainable alternative fuels; financing for aviation environmental activities; and carbon markets.

It encouraged dialogue to recognize the importance of partnerships to multiply environmental action and explored further opportunities for partnerships, including those in new areas such as aircraft recycling and adaptation to climate change.

This event provided a forum to showcase the synergetic effects of ICAO’s ongoing partnerships with governments and other organizations for action to reduce emissions from international aviation. It was a concrete vehicle for the Organization’s message to the UNFCCC COP21, and directly responded to one of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN Summit, i.e. SDG 17 – “Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development”.

Videos and Communication Material

Press briefings, exhibition booths and side events were organized by ICAO on the occasion of ICAO and UNFCCC meetings, such as COP21.

ICAO produced a video to highlight its activities in the field of aviation and environment. This video was launched at COP21 and reported progress on various initiatives including States’ action plans, sustainable biofuels, a GMBM scheme, aeroplane CO₂ standard, and global aspirational goals. ICAO’s partnerships with relevant organizations to reduce aviation emissions were also presented.

Promotional material was produced to highlight ICAO’s achievements in the area of aviation and the environment, and several articles were published in a special edition of the ICAO Journal.
