Outreach and Awareness Activities
Continuing efforts were made by the Organization, through various means such as State letters and global and regional meetings, to promote adherence by States to international conventions and agreements, including the International Air Services Transit Agreement (IASTA), and the Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for International Carriage by Air, adopted in Montréal on 28 May 1999 (Montréal Convention of 1999).
The Secretariat participated actively in the activities of the Global Travel Association Coalition (GTAC), a cooperative initiative launched by a group of leading governmental and private organizations from the travel and tourism sectors. The aim of the group is to promote a better understanding of the role of the travel and tourism sector as a driver of economic growth, employment and sustainable development.
The Secretariat continued to cooperate with the aviation industry through the Industry High Level Group (IHLG), composed of ICAO, Airports Council International (ACI), Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO), International Air Transport Association (IATA) and International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industry Associations (ICCAIA). During the 39th Session of the Assembly, the heads of all IHLG member organizations met and agreed to select “Maximizing and showcasing to better communicate the benefits of aviation” as an area for which the group will dedicate focused and prioritized efforts. The IHLG aims, inter alia, at developing a universally-accepted methodology to measure aviation’s gross domestic product relative to overall economic activity, as well as a comprehensive strategy to better showcase the benefits of aviation.
To promote ICAO’s work related to Strategic Objective Economic Development of Air Transport, the Secretariat updated and partially restructured the organizational interfaces of the ICAO website for the programmes and projects, with a view to improving the site on a continuous basis.
