Emerging Aviation Issues — Big data analytics for aviation

Big data analytics for aviation

Aviation is at the cusp of data transformation due to the velocity and quantity of growth in data and the evolution of new technologies for analysing such “big data”. ICAO is expanding activities related to big data using various data sets to represent an all-encompassing coverage of traffic and operational data at a very high level of granularity and detail.

ICAO is a member of the inter-agency Global Working Group on Big Data established by the UN Statistical Commission (UNSD). One of the objectives of this working group is to promote practical use of big data for official statistics and capacity building for monitoring the progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Big data analytics were integrated into projects of the Air Navigation Bureau such as the Integrated Safety Trend Analysis and Reporting System (iSTARS) and the Safety Information Monitoring System (SIMS). ICAO has launched pilot projects in relation to deep learning. ICAO has released a prototype on the evaluation of the criticality of NOTAMS for commercial air operations.
