Cargo safety
To facilitate the transport of COVID-19 vaccines and pharmaceuticals, the ICAO Council approved amendments to the 2021–2022 edition of the
Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air (Doc 9284). Guidance was also developed and published on the
OPS Normal website to support operators’ safety risk assessment processes for the transportation of such consignments.
Designators
The
processing of designators was not affected by the pandemic. The figures indicated below are similar to those of 2019, prior to the pandemic.

| | During 2021, ICAO issued 181 new three-letter designators, modified
57 designators, and deleted
36 designators for aircraft operating agencies, aeronautical authorities and services. |
| • | Location indicators (Doc 7910) |
| | During 2021, ICAO added 1 065 new location indicators. |
| • | Aircraft type designators (Doc 8643) |
| | During 2021, ICAO added 1 065 new aircraft type designators and 31 new manufacture codes for small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). |
