The Project is supporting developing States and SIDS in their challenge to address climate change and contribute to implementation of the ambitious Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted in September 2015 at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit “taking urgent action on climate change”
The project will primarily identifying and facilitating the implementation of measures to reduce international aviation emissions. In this strategic partnership with GEF and UNDP, ICAO is working with the developing States and SIDS to strengthen their national capacities and improve national processes and mechanisms for the reduction of aviation emissions by:
- understanding the costs and environmental benefits associated with implementation of the aviation low emissions measures through conducting an assessment of costs and environmental benefits associated with implementation of the aviation low emissions measures,
- enhancing policy framework through a series of policy instruments, including guidance papers and studies on: regulatory and organizational measures to promote low emissions aviation; financing mechanisms to support implementation of aviation emissions reduction activities; promotion of use of alternative jet fuels; and use of renewable energy at the airports,
- sharing knowledge and resources through an integrated environmental portal, as well as other awareness-raising initiatives, and
- Pilot Project: installing solar power system at an airport in Jamaica, facilitating the replicability of the solar technology at airports, thus equipping developing States and SIDS with tools to carry on similar projects and multiplying their environmental benefits.
