Eradicating Human Trafficking – Aviation’s Contribution to Ending a Global Problem

The ICAO-OHCHR Joint Forum will bring together, in a high-level setting, Member States, aviation industry, partners and key players in the field of human rights to discuss the important role that aviation plays in addressing the problem of trafficking in persons. The forum will also include an interactive exhibit to gain hands-on knowledge of issues related to trafficking in persons.

Attendance at this forum will provide participants with the topics that should be included in training programmes on the identification and response to trafficking in persons, aimed particularly at cabin crew members.

Intended outcomes

  • Identify ways to assist States, civil aviation authorities (CAAs), airline personnel and other aviation professionals on how to:
    • develop and implement training for airline and airport personnel on the identification of and response to trafficking in persons;
    • conduct the oversight of airlines' training programmes aimed at combating trafficking in persons; and
    • promote collaborative efforts between CAAs, other State agencies and the aviation industry.
  • Increase awareness of States, CAAs, airline personnel and other aviation professionals of:
    • current challenges faced by the international aviation community in combatting trafficking in persons; and
    • the globally harmonized approach presented in the joint ICAO-OHCHR Guidelines for Training Cabin Crew on Identification and Response to Trafficking in Persons (Circ 352).
  • Help participants become better informed on the:
    • role aviation plays in addressing the problem of trafficking in persons; and
    • framework and topics that should be included in training packages on the identification and response to trafficking in persons, aimed particularly at cabin crew members.
  • Provide participants with practical applications through:
    • examples of existing training programmes being implemented by airlines to combat trafficking in persons;
    • initiatives undertaken by States to combat trafficking in persons in aviation; and
    • an interactive exhibit to gain hands-on knowledge of issues related to trafficking in persons.
