Description:

Following key decisions and important work on innovation at ICAO, the MID Office is organizing a Regional Innovation Webinar, on 29 August 2022, under the theme "Innovation for Enhanced Resilience in International Civil Aviation". The Objectives of the Webinar are to showcase innovations in aviation that have the potential to help progress on the ICAO Strategic Objectives, deliver on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and enable the recovery and resilience of the aviation system; and help viewers understand the technologies, the opportunities and challenges related to the technologies, exploration of its multiple facets and lessons learned.

Mr. Mohamed Abubaker Farea, Regional Director, Middle East Office, ICAO


Mr. Abu Baker graduated in Aeronautical Engineering from United Kingdom and obtained the engineering accreditation license from United Kingdom, United States and the United Arab Emirates. He started his career in aviation by joining Gulf Aircraft Maintenance Company, where he held various positions till his promotion as senior engineer. In the beginning of the establishment of UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Mr. Abu Baker was appointed as the Airworthiness Inspector, where he played an active role in the development of GCAA's laws and regulations. He has been appointed also as Director of the Civil Aviation Safety and Security Department and chosen as Chairman of the Safety Committee for Arab States and entrusted with the chairmanship of the Committee for the Development of Civil Aviation Systems in Gulf Cooperation Council.Then he joined Etihad Airways as Executive Vice President for Security, Safety and Quality, and has been elected to be a council security member in International Air Transport Association, after that he was appointed CEO of Istithmar International Aviation, to manage the investments of the domestic and foreign aviation sector in Dubai World. During this short period, he contributed to transforming the company back to a profitability. Then, he was appointed as Director of the Air Transport Development and Planning Department in Abu Dhabi Department of Transport, responsible for bilateral air service agreements between the concerned States.

H.E. Husain Al Shuail, Acting Undersecretary Civil Aviation Affairs, Kingdom of Bahrain

H.E. Husain Al Shuail appointed Acting Undersecretary Civil Aviation Affairs. He holds Responsibility for overseeing all aspects of aviation, mandated to sets laws, regulations, and guidelines for the conduct of all aviation operations as well as ensuring compliance with international conventions, treaties, and standards.  Mr. Al-Shuail holds a diploma in Electrical Engineering from the University of Bahrain and a BSc. (Honors) in Electrical Engineering & Technology Empire State College-State University of New York Degree in Electrical Engineering. He has long experience in managing key projects in Bahrain.

Mohammed Faleh AlHajri, Acting President, Qatar Civil Aviation Authority


H.E. Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), UAE


Serves as Director General of General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) since April 2008. Appointed for 2010-2012 and re-elected for 2012-2014 as a Chairman of Arab Civil Aviation Commission Council. Graduated as a helicopter pilot from flying school in Abu Dhabi. Since then, handled a number of key positions in the Air Force Headquarter until he reached the rank of Major General Air Marshal, served during his career several leadership positions until assigned as a Director of Operation in 2006. Holds a Bachelor Degree in Law from Beirut Arab University, Lebanon. Following Strategic vision and foresight has been instrumental in advancing the aviation industry and implementing state-of-the-art technology with safety and security performance in accordance with international standards.

Ebtesam Mohamed AlShamlan, Director of Air Transport, Civil Aviation Affairs, Kingdom of Bahrain

Ebtesam joined Civil Aviation Affairs in 1993 and progressed in administrative positions until she assumed the position of Assistant Undersecretary for Air Transport and Aviation Security and Safety, with more than 33 years of experience in the field of civil aviation. She obtained the Government Excellence Award in 2019 for providing best practices at the level of the government sector (Nawras system for approvals of flight schedules for aircraft transiting the territory of the Kingdom of Bahrain and landing at Bahrain International Airport). Ebstesam holds MBA and bachelor’s degree in accounting and cost estimation.

Mohammed Al-Mohammadi, Head of Training section, Air Navigation Department, Qatar Civil Aviation Authority


Mr. Shashi Prakash, Sustainability & Carbon Expert, Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure, UAE


Shashi is the Sustainability & carbon Expert with over 18 years of experience in sustainability & Climate change. In his current role, he is managing programme office of sustainable aviation fuel under Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure, UAE. In previous roles, Shashi worked with Supreme committee for delivery and legacy for managing the sustainability & climate change for FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar. He has worked with UNFCCC secretariate and Ernst & Young (EY) on climate change mitigation, carbon neutrality, carbon capture storage, green buildings and sustainability management. Shashi holds a master's in Energy Management, and he is Programme Management Professional (PMP), LEED accredited professional (LEED AP BD+C). Shashi is member of UNFCCC review and issuance team.
