Promotion and further information sharing among States on aviation alternative fuels continued to be pursued through ICAO. The SUSTAF Experts Group focused its work on the identification of the major challenges for the deployment of sustainable alternative fuels for aviation and on possible solutions to overcome them. In particular, the issue of the sustainability of such fuels was addressed and the Group aimed to identify possible options States might use to address this issue.
The outcome and recommendations of the Group were considered by the Council and were made available on the GFAAF website.
ICAO was invited to participate in the Alternative Fuels Pavilion organized in conjunction with the Le Bourget Paris Air Show in June 2013. ICAO showcased the initiatives being undertaken by the Organization on sustainable alternative fuels for aviation. In addition, while showing the progress achieved since last year on alternative fuels, ICAO commemorated the first anniversary of the Flightpath to a Sustainable Future initiative.
The 38th Session of the Assembly recognized the progress achieved by ICAO to promote and facilitate the development and deployment of sustainable alternative fuels for aviation, and supported further work by the organization and its Member States to address the challenges in the development and deployment of sustainable alternative fuels for aviation, including the work on sustainability criteria and the projection of future production and life-cycle environmental benefits of such fuels.
In this regard, the CAEP Steering Group established an Alternative Fuels Task Force (AFTF) that will assess the potential range of emission reductions from the use of alternative fuels in aviation up to 2050.
