Runway safety
In 2021, the Runway Safety Go-Team methodology was updated to enable the provision of virtual assistance, and a revision of the ICAO Global Runway Safety Action Plan (GRSAP) was launched. In addition, early preparations began for a runway safety seminar in the European and North Atlantic regions.
Activities were carried out to support the implementation of the Global Reporting Format for assessing and reporting runway surface conditions (GRF) by the applicability date of 4 November 2021, including 20 regional webinars. Training activities in English, French, Russian and Spanish were conducted through a computer-based and virtual instructor-led format in cooperation with Airports Council International (ACI), the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO). Additional operational guidance and a generic change and risk management document were also published. Cooperation with the ICAO Regional Offices and industry stakeholders continued through regular meetings of the informal GRF coordination group. A process for monitoring implementation was established, with States reporting on agreed milestones via their respective ICAO Regional Offices. By the end of 2021, around 140 States had implemented the GRF or had commenced execution of their implementation plans.
