In the event of an aircraft accident, communicating with the media requires careful planning and execution. The way information is shared can have a significant impact on the aircraft accident victims and their families, and on the public perception of the occurrence, with potential risks for the image and reputation of the safety investigation authority and other stakeholders involved in the safety investigations.
Following the ICAO Symposium on Assistance to Aircraft Accident Victims and their Families (AAAVF 2021) held from 1 to 3 December 2021 at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, a recommendation was made to address and focus on media communication following aircraft accidents.
Recommendation No 2: The AIGP should also consider providing guidance on how to address communication media when an accident occurs and how to continue providing verified, on-time information for public release, while protecting the investigation process
