The Fifth Special ATS Co-ordination Meeting – China, Mongolia, The Russian Federation and IATA was held at the ICAO Asia/Pacific Regional Office from 20 to 21 June, 2007 and was attended by experts from China, Mongolia, IATA and ICAO. Regrettably, a delegation from the Russian Federation was unable to attend the meeting.
China advised the CMRI/5 meeting that effective from July 5, 2007, China will expand the range of flexible choice of entry/exit points on polar routes and implement new management rules for the polar routes operations. Commencing from July 5, entry/exit points MORIT and SADLI, with their connecting routes in the China FIRs, have been added to the existing flexible choice arrangements in order to provide greater flexibility for airspace users.
This announcement by China was seen by CMRI/5 as a very significant improvement in managing traffic flows via China. Recognizing that this was the first major step forward since the initiatives agreed during CMRI/4 in 2003, the meeting thanked China for their continuing work in this area. IATA and the member airlines present highlighted that the implementation of the new arrangements would greatly increase flexibility for airline operations and formally placed on the record their gratitude to China for opening the two additional entry/exit points for flexible use.
