The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) expresses its deep condolences upon the loss of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims of this tragic accident,” remarked the UN agency’s Council President, Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu.
“Any accident or incident resulting in loss of life is always of great concern to ICAO and the entire air transport community," added ICAO Secretary General Dr. Fang Liu.
ICAO looks forward to learning about the cause of this accident and to reviewing the findings and recommendations and responding as needed to ensure that air transport continues to be the safest form of transportation, to the benefit of future passengers and crew.
ICAO does not normally participate in aircraft accident investigations, except when the State or States with related authority under Annex 13 — Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation to the Chicago Convention request the organization’s assistance. In those exceptional circumstances, ICAO’s assistance would normally see it acting as an official observer and/or clarifying various Annex 13 technical requirements when requested.
Annex 13 — Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation Final Reports are encouraged to be submitted by the State or States in charge within 12 months of the event, and ultimately provide as much official information as possible on an accident’s contributing causes and factors, as well as official recommendations on how applicable aviation safety frameworks may need to be amended.
