Montréal 01 October 2019 – The first ICAO Treaty Event was successfully conducted this year during the 40th Session of the ICAO Assembly.
Seven States took the opportunity to sign and deposit instruments of ratification to international air law treaties for which ICAO acts as Depositary, with a total of 14 depositary actions being recorded.
The Treaty Event focussed mainly on the promotion of the Montreal Convention of 1999, the Beijing Convention and Protocol of 2010, the Montréal Protocol of 2014, as well as the 2016 Protocols amending Articles 50(a) and 56 of the Chicago Convention. Its results now mean that there are 32 Parties to the Beijing Convention, 34 Parties to the Beijing Protocol as well as 51 Parties to the 2016 Protocols amending Articles 50(a) and 56 of the Chicago Convention.
Taking place under the theme of “A Century of International Air Law Treaties”, the timing of the 2019 event recognized the fact that this year not only marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago, 1944), but also the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Aerial Navigation (Paris, 1919).
