Northvolt

Northvolt is a supplier of sustainable, high-quality battery cells and systems and was founded with the mission to build the world´s greenest battery.

Northvolt is introducing a new concept inspired by the semiconductor industry, focusing on scale, customized customer solutions, vertical integration and highly controlled manufacturing. The execution is fundamentally different compared to current battery production facilities.

Northvolt is dedicated to create a circular system, and has the highest ambitions regarding life cycle management: their approach covers cradle to grave. Building the factory in the Nordic region will enable Northvolt to rely on fossil free energy, given its carbon free power base.

Northvolt´s first large-scale battery factory will be established in Skellefteå, in Northern Sweden. The factory, Northvolt Ett, will serve as the main production site. The first part of the factory will be completed in 2020 and it will be expanded gradually until full capacity of 32 GWh is reached. Northvolt industrial partners and customers include ABB, BMW Group, Scania, Siemens, Vattenfall, Vestas and the Volkswagen Group.

In Västerås (Sweden), Northvolt has established its Northvolt Labs - a demonstration line and research facility that is used to qualify and industrialize products and processes, all with participation from Northvolt’s partners and customers. Northvolt Labs is a key step towards the establishment of Northvolt’s large-scale lithium-ion battery factory in Skellefteå, which will serve as the main production site and include active material preparation, cell assembly, recycling and auxiliaries.

In addition to the facilities in Sweden, Volkswagen and Northvolt plan to set up a 50/50 joint venture to establish a 16 GWh battery cell factory in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony, Germany.

Since its official launch in March 2017, Northvolt has grown from 12 to almost 300 people from 45 different nationalities. In 2018, Northvolt delivered its first product – a battery pack – to Epiroc’s fleet of underground mining machines, and also produced its first battery cell.
