Technology is a fundamental part of the aviation security system, supporting the effective detection of prohibited items and weapons in high volume passenger, baggage and cargo environments. Unlike most technologies used outside the security realm, screening technologies may contain sensitive or protected information, or environmentally hazardous materials, which need to be disposed of in a particular way. Therefore, the Working Group on Innovation in Aviation Security with the support of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) developed The Disposal of Screening Equipment guidance material which outlines some general recommendations on the issues to consider when disposing of screening equipment, such as the removal of sensitive information, environmental and safety considerations, and the donation of equipment.
