ICAO’s work in the field of environmental protection, and notably climate change activities, involves cooperation with a number of other United Nations bodies, in particular the UNFCCC and its working groups.
ICAO participated in the Climate Change Conference in Warsaw, Poland, in November, which encompassed a number of other meetings, notably the 19th Conference of the Parties (COP 19) to the UNFCCC, the 39th Session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA39), and the 2nd session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP2). ICAO submitted a report and provided a statement to SBSTA outlining the achievements of the 38th Session of the Assembly.
During the Warsaw Conference, ICAO promoted awareness of its initiatives under the theme “International aviation and climate change – global solutions for a global industry”. ICAO’s presentations focused on the achievements of the 38th Session of the Assembly and on joint initiatives with other UN bodies, the European Union and the aviation industry on States’ Action Plans on emissions reduction activities and assistance to States.
ICAO was also represented at meetings of the Green Climate Fund, United Nations Environment Management Group (EMG), United Nations Issue Management Groups (IMGs), UN coordination meetings conducted by the United Nations High-Level Committee on Programmes (HLCP) Working Group on Climate Change, and meetings on Rio+20 follow up coordinated by the United Nations’ Department of Economic and Social Affairs UNDESA.
