Gender Equality
Implementation continued of ICAO’s Gender Equality Programme. In 2019 ICAO successfully implemented the majority of the actions within the Organization.
Aviation Gender Equality Statistics
For the purpose of collecting and analysing statistics on personnel in civil aviation globally, the Secretariat is working to amend the States’ reporting forms to include gender disaggregated data. During the last meeting of the Aviation Data and Analysis Panel (ADAP/2), the Secretariat proposed a new ICAO Air Transport Reporting Form (G1 – Employment Statistics of Aviation Licensed Personnel by Gender) to collect data on aviation licensed personnel (pilots, maintenance personnel and air traffic controllers) segmented by gender and age. The results of the survey were presented at seminars and workshops in 2019.
Gender-Related Events and Activities
Specific targeted outreach resulted in the selection of two qualified women filling the D 1 posts of Regional Director, Paris and Chief Finance Branch, Montréal.
Gender mainstreaming efforts were increased in 2019. This included the presentation on Women in Aviation at the Personnel Training and Licensing Exploratory Meeting (PTL/EM/1) in July 2019, which generated a great deal of discussion and resulted in two recommendations directly related to women in the aviation sector.
International Women’s Day, with the theme of “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change,” took place on
8 March 2019 at ICAO Headquarters in Montréal. This annual collaborative event between ICAO, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Airport Council International (ACI) was attended by staff from these organizations. The event featured female keynote speakers from Transport Canada, Air Canada and the Halifax Airport Authority, who provided a unique insight into equality in the aviation sector.
